Last summer, Phil and I attended the Utah Arts Festival and while there ran across an artist that I immediately fell in love with: Lisa Telling Kattenbraker. Her works are done in batik and are mostly of children, but many of them also include chickens, and anyone who knows me knows that I love chickens. Not only do I love her unique style and themes, but I just feel happy when I look at her work; it always makes me smile.
Well, we couldn't afford to get anything at the time, but I got her business card and would periodically go to her website and look longingly at my favorite piece. When Phil asked me what I wanted for a graduation present, it didn't take me long to decide.
I wasn't able to find out if the original was still available, so we purchased a signed, limited edition reproduction. My grandparents offered to pay to get it framed as their gift to me for my graduation, and after much worrying about matte colors and frame types, I finally got the picture back on Saturday and it is now hanging happily on my wall.
The piece is called, "She was always prepared for what she hoped was just around the corner" and I think I love the title as much as I love the art itself.
I just look at that little girl, wearing her party hat and holding her cage of balloons, hoping for the chance to use them, and I can't help but be happy. Shouldn't we all go through life as optimistic as she? I think so. Thank you Lisa Telling Kattenbraker for creating such beautiful work.
